So, you were good enough this year that Santa dropped a PlayStation 4 down the chimney or your loved one bought you the best next-gen console for the holidays. What now?!? Where does one begin with such a powerful, versatile machine? Here are your simple instructions new PS4 owners, should you choose to accept them:
1. Buy a Big Game
Duh, right? And yet it’s obviously the place to start. With all the fun things your PS4 can do, it will be first, foremost, and last a video game-playing experience for most of you. Let’s say you didn’t get one of those bundle packs with games already included and literally have nothing to play. Where should you begin? While the year ended strongly (and our top ten games of 2014 will be coming soon…trust me…a few more missions to complete to settle some very close races), the most essential games for the PS4 are still remasters of PS3 hits. Nothing shows off the potential of the system like “Grand Theft Auto V” and the best game of the last two years remains “The Last of Us.” Those two titles are still the most essential to experiencing what the PS4 has to offer. If you want to be up with the new titles, the best of the current games are “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” “Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor,” “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” and “Far Cry 4.” Pick the one that looks most interesting to you or click through to my reviews for further details (and come back the first week of 2015 to see where they place in my top ten. 2. Download a Small Game
You’re going to need to become friend with the PSN (PlayStation Network), and there’s no better way to do so than to start shopping. The PSN is essential to the PS4 experience. Sony has designed this machine to be a social experience, whether it’s in multiplayer combat, leaderboards, or social sharing of videos and screenshots. That stuff will all come naturally, as you experience the online portions of each game individually. First, you should take whatever free game Sony is offering through the PlayStation Plus right now. Carve out some free time if it’s still “Injustice: Gods Among Us” because that game is a blast, and prepare yourself for something new every month. You should also dive into a few games that don’t come with your PlayStation Plus membership, including the riveting “Child of Light,” addictive “Zen Pinball 2,” and everything that Telltale Games makes, including “The Walking Dead,” “Tales From the Borderlands,” “The Wolf Among Us” and “Game of Thrones,” in that order.
3. Set Up Your Entertainment Options
The TV/Video services on the PS4 are robust and plentiful, easily serving as replacements for cable for an increasing number of people. You can access almost all of your favorites through the PS4 with quick app downloads, and most of them come with free trials for you to pick and choose your favorite. Personally, Netflix and Vudu have become staples in our household. The former is a well-known entity, but you should know that the interface on the PS4 is better than most systems, and the streaming quality is stellar. Hulu Plus looks good too, as does Amazon Instant Streaming. The PSN offers the same wide selection of On Demand titles as Vudu but the interface isn’t nearly as pretty. And you can use Vudu to store all the Ultraviolet copies of most recent Blu-rays in your house.
